Dr. S. N. Pathan has the unique combination of an excellent academic career coupled with outstanding achievements in academics and administration. He started his career as a Lecturer & Head, Department of Botany, at Padmashree Vikhe Patil College, Pravaranagar. Later on, he served as Principal in Pune for about 5 years. He then joined as Principal of the esteemed Government Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai with additional charge as Director, Government Sydenham Institute of Management, Research & Entrepreneurship Education, Mumbai. He was subsequently elevated to the prestigious position of Director of Higher Education, Maharashtra State, in 1999, where he served till 13th July 2005. As director of Higher Education, Maharashtra, he steered the Higher Education policies of the State and maintained high academic excellence in the state. He encouraged over 1000 colleges to undergo the process of assessment & accreditation by NAAC, thereby bringing Maharashtra to the top in terms of the number of accredited institutions in India. He also held additional charges as Director (Vice-Chancellor Status) of Deccan College, Pune, Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Deemed University for 3 years. His knowledge, understanding, vision and administrative acumen in higher education earned him due recognition, when he was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University on 14th July, 2005 by His Excellency the Chancellor & Governor of Maharashtra. For the first time in the history of Maharashtra, a member of the Muslim Community (minority), Dr. S. N. Pathan, was accorded the privilege of being the Vice-Chancellor in this 85-year-old prestigious University located at Nagpur. Born on 1st May 1949 in a remote village in Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra, Dr. S. N. Pathan completed his primary and secondary education locally and later on went on to do his graduation and post-graduation in Botany at Shivaji University, Kolhapur, through “Earn & Learn” scheme. He obtained Ph. D. degree in Eco-physiology in 1983 from Shivaji University, Kolhapur. His achievements and excellence in the subject paved way to become Chairman of Board of Studies in Botany in University of Pune during 1984-87. He has many achievements, both on the academic and administrative fronts, beginning with the under graduate department in a rural college and later on establishment of Postgraduate & Research Centre in Botany outside University of Pune for the first time is a pinnacle in his academic career. By virtue of his position as Director, Higher Education of the State, he worked as Member of management Council, Academic Council and Senate of all the Non- Agricultural Universities in Maharashtra. He introduced for the first time the Centralized B.Ed. Entrance Examination at the State level, which was widely appreciated. Dr. Pathan was the Chairman of the Committee for new Solapur University (Maharashtra). In recognition of his long academic and administrative experience, he was appointed on various selection & other committees, both within & outside the State. He has worked as Chairman of the Peer Team of National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC), Bangalore for colleges in West Bengal. UGC nominee on Advisory Committee for Academic Staff College, Osmania University, Hyderabad and Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, apart from being the member of the UGC Standing Committee on Minorities, as well as Standing Committee on Colleges with Potential for Excellence and for Career Oriented Programmes. He was also a member of the UGC Committee to assess the performance of colleges with potential for Excellence. He has also worked for the UGC Committee to recommend sanction of Plan Grants to universities, UGC Committee to sanction funds for conducting add-on courses for colleges in the country & on many more UGC Committees. Another aspect of his academic talent found expression through his writings and publishing several research papers in Eco-Physiology, Bio-diversity and Taxonomy of Plants in National and International Journals. He has also authored 6 books in Botany. He has also written a book entitled “Quality Improvement Programme in Higher Education through NAAC – A Success Story of Maharashtra” to provide guidance and insight to the colleges in the country. This book was appreciated by the Hon’ble Chairman of UGC and was released by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri. Vilasrao Deshmukh. Dr. S. N. Pathan was invited by Syracuse University, USA to develop collaborative programme with Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University and accordingly he visited the University in July 2007 and initiated the said programme. He was invited to deliver a lecture and visit for scientific collaboration with Abant Izzet Baysal University, Bolu, Turkey in May 2008. He has presented several research papers in International Conferences held in Germany, Japan, USA & Nepal. He has also delivered keynote address in an International Conference at Jakarta (Indonesia). He has also worked with prof. Zigler in Technical University, Munich (West Germany) and in Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, London on Computer Taxonomy. Widely traveled, Dr. Pathan was a member of the delegation of Government of Maharashtra to visit various Universities in USA located at Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Purdue University. He has also attended the Vice Chancellors’ Conference organized by Sakal Group of Newspapers at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Bangkok. He has several publications to his credit and has also guided a number of Ph.D. students in their research work. Dr. S. N. Pathan is the recipient of many awards, notably being the ‘Ideal Teacher’ Award from Zilla Parishad, Ahmednagar and also the prestigious FIE Foundation National Award presented at Ichalkaranji which carried a citation & a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- In recognition of the valuable and effective services rendered in the field of Higher Education, His Excellency Shri. S. M. Kishna, the then Hon’ble Governor and Chancellor of Universities of Maharashtra had nominated him on the Maharashtra State Council of Higher Education, which is the supreme body of planning, co-ordination and monitoring in the state for Higher Education. Considering the contribution of Dr. S. N. Pathan in the field of higher education, the Hon’ble Minister of HRD Shri Kapil Sibal has appointed him as the Member, Executive Committee, National Council of Teacher Education, New Delhi and on the National Council for the Promotion of Urdu Language. Dr. S. N. Pathan is a First Maharashtrian to get elected as a Vice-President of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi. Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India, for the period of three years (2012 to 2015) & greatly contributed in the field of culture across the world. Presently, Dr. S. N. Pathan is doing invaluable work for the promotion of communal harmony and social peace in the world through the offices of World Peace Centre (Alandi), MAEER’s MIT, Pune, India. Dr. S. N. Pathan is also Chief-Coordinator for the autonomous certificate course titled, “Universal Value based Education & Winning Personality Development” conducted by World Peace Centre (Alandi), MAEER’s MIT, Pune, India since 2014 in Maharashtra. Dr. S. N. Pathan was instrumental in initiating the construction of Shri Ram Temple & Jama Masjid, Hajrat Jainuddin Chistey Darga in Rameshwar (Rui), Tal. Dist. Latur which was built by Prof. Dr. V. D. Karad, President, World Peace Centre (Alandi), MAEER’s MIT, Pune, India is paper titled “Resolution of Mandir-Masjid Conflict in India: A Step Towards Religious Harmony: A Case Study of Rameshwar (Rui) Model from Maharashtra India” was highly appreciated in IPRA (International Peace Research Association) 2014 organised at Istanbul, Turkey dated 11th, 12th Or 13th August
- Recently his paper titled, “Similarities Between Namaz of Islam & Yoga of Hinduism for Promotion of Culture of Peace in the World” has been accepted for presentation in IPRA 2016 organised at Sierra Leon, Freetown, West Africa in November 2016.
